SRJC Condemns the Illegal Detainment of our member Carrie Shelver by Israeli Authorities
For Immediate Release
Date: 10 October 2025
The Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition (SRJC) strongly condemns the illegal actions of the Israeli government in detaining SRJC member Carrie Shelver, a renowned advocate for gender justice and human rights.
Shelver was among six South Africans who were unjustly kidnapped by Israeli authorities on Thursday, 2 October, while onboard Wahoo, a Swiss Waves of Freedom vessel participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza, a peaceful humanitarian mission seeking to challenge Israel’s unlawful siege on Gaza by opening a humanitarian corridor to deliver urgently needed aid. The vessels were intercepted in international waters, in clear violation of international law.
Shelver and her fellow South African activists, who included Mandla Mandela, Zukiswa Wanner, Reaaz Moolla, Zaheer Soomar, and Dr Fatima Hendricks, were detained for six days under humiliating and oppressive conditions.
We are deeply relieved and grateful that all six activists, including Carrie Shelver, have returned safely to South African soil as of Wednesday, 8 October. Their courage and commitment to global justice reflect the true spirit of solidarity and humanity that defines our country’s struggle heritage.
The SRJC stands firmly in solidarity with Carrie Shelver and all activists who, without any government support, took it upon themselves to extend compassion and material aid to the people of Gaza. Human rights are universal, and violations of these rights anywhere demand our collective outrage and resistance.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains dire. The people of Gaza continue to live under genocidal conditions despite months of warnings from journalists and human rights defenders. A September report by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry confirmed that Israel’s actions constitute genocide. This week also marks the second anniversary of Israel’s siege on Gaza.
The Palestinian health system is severely fragmented and under immense strain, leaving countless people without access to essential healthcare. These conditions are a direct consequence of the ongoing blockade and systemic oppression perpetuated by the Israeli government.
As a movement rooted in justice, equality, and human dignity, the SRJC reiterates that sexual and reproductive justice cannot exist without political freedom and bodily autonomy for all people. We therefore call on the South African government, civil society, and the international community to:
- Condemn the unlawful detention of activists by Israeli authorities;
- Impose diplomatic pressure to end the siege on Gaza;
- Call for an immediate ceasefire;
- Support humanitarian and human rights efforts that uphold the dignity and wellbeing of the Palestinian people;
- Uphold state obligations to address Israel’s impunity and the ongoing killing of Palestinian people.
The SRJC honours Carrie Shelver and her fellow activists for their bravery and moral leadership. Their actions remind us that solidarity is an act of justice.
